hey LEM Dan,

As you’ve read, Beverly, your LEM Swap list nanny, and I are having a dispute over what can be sold on LEM Swap. I copied to you one of my responses to her but haven’t heard back from you. In order to continue with things, I need your “ruling”…. At this point, she has moderated me and then not bothered to respond to my previous two emails. After nearly a DECADE in good standing on LEM Swap, I find this treatment to be unacceptable.

Beverly has accused me of being a dealer.

Beyond the fact that there are quite a few dealers regularly dumping merch on LEM Swap without being hassled,,, I am NOT a dealer. Because of health issues, my small consulting & Mac repair biz was closed over a year and a half ago and I’m now living in a nursing home. I have +/- six months to liquidate everything before my old landlord feeds it to a dumpster. I cannot use CraigsList so I am hoping to sell most of the stuff to my friends on LEM Swap. … software, old Macs, Mac parts, HDs, mounting hardware & screws, cables, displays, printers, disc burners, laserwriter fusers & toner carts, inkjet carts, floppies, floppy labels, CD DVD & Blu-Ray blanks, disc labels, disc sleeves, jewel boxes, etc.

Beverly’s next complaint was about me selling disc sleeves because they’re not "related goods".

The faq says:
“LEM Swap is Low End Mac’s Google Group for buying and selling Mac OS computers and related goods.”

IMO, like blank discs, labels, and jewel boxes, they *are* __Related Goods__. These items are all must-haves to burn discs ON YOUR MAC. Additionally, a few years ago, I WAS PERMITTED to sell such on LEM Swap with no problem.

Your FAQ goes on to say items like digital cameras are not acceptable because they are standalone items that are unrelated to Macs. That’s fine. But the supplies I have are NOT stand-alone items. They’re useless to anyone that doesn’t have a burner connected to their Mac. They’re PART of using a disc burner on a Mac. Likewise, am I going to have the same problem with selling disc blanks? Floppy discs? Labels? ...

Beverly then complained that I was obtaining products for resale.

I bought the first brick from my old wholesaler (a mac-only warehouse; yes, I still have friend/relationships with several wholesalers) because I needed some for myself. I offered the remainder on LEM Swap. Within an hour, all that I had were sold out! Then a strange thing happened - quite a few people blindly paypal’d money to me, expecting that it would be ok, and I would simply fill their orders. I emailed them, offering to refund the money — but they said they’d prefer to wait, while I got more. My wholesaler said he’d honor the same price, so I got two more bricks. And now I’m stuck with 2/3 of a brick because Beverly deleted the 2nd ad! ..The wholesaler actually wants me to buy the rest of the palette heh.

I expect, just as it happened a few years ago, that if I offer disc blanks on LEM Swap, the same thing will happen.

The people on LEM Swap are hungry for these items at the prices I’m able to provide. Why is this a problem?

Thanks,
- Dan (in NJ).

All,

I have some ORB 2.2GB Disks by Castlewood. They were written from a
desktop Mac in the late 1990s using an external burner drive.

Today i use a Windows laptop and a desktop Linux machine. The laptop
runs Vista and the Linux machine runs Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

My question: does anyone have a path to get my data from these ORB 2.2GB
disks to one or more DVDROM that could be mounted on the Linux machine.

I appreciate that there may be differences between the file formats from
the ORB disks and those readable on the Linux machine.

Thanks in advance.

The hardest part would probably be finding someone with a drive to
read them; the rest is fairly easy.

Amazingly drives seem relatively cheap and plentiful on fleabay.

You’ll need an appropriate device with a SCSI interface; an old PowerPC mac would work just fine, then copy it over the network to the Linux box as files, burn to DVD on linux box. Easy.

“Easy”, he says, mockingly, because he’s gone down badger holes like this before and has the scars to prove it… :-)

But that would be my approach if I had to do this. I have a bunch of old Syquest 135 mb disks laying about. I think my old drives work, just don’t have a Mac with SCSI running right now to read them.

About once every couple of months we get a plea on our campus-wide IT list:

“Does anyone have any [insert name of long obsolete storage device] we have some [insert name of media for the long obsolete storage device]’s that we need to recover data from.”

More broadly this kind of issue is an ongoing slow motion catastrophe in the world; we’re losing old data at a vastly accelerated rate compared to the rest of human history. We have stuff from the dawn of the invention of writing, 5000 years ago, that we can read…we have data tapes from 1975 that we cannot.

Nothing we’ve ever created with computers come close to even the longevity of a well made book.

Tried that - I copied one of the messages with Beverly to him, and my summary (the OP of this thread) was addressed to him first.

Still haven’t gotten a response from either Dan or Beverly.

Do you have any specific groups in mind?

I’ve perused FB, but not found any serious/reliable groups for selling my stuff. Not a big fan of FB.
