Subject: Fix or Replace 1GHz G4
I have a 1GHz mirrored-door G4 (M8689) that I need to run a piece of legacy lab equipment. It boots up fine and seems to run well, but after several minutes the monitor turns off and, a few moments later, the computer shuts down. For what it is worth, the fan has been running constantly for the past few months. If anyone has any advice about how to repair the poor old thing, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, suggestions for a good source for a replacement would be useful. My online searches have not but fruitful.

Years ago when I got a used MDD it had a huge build up of dust bunnies the size of rodent mice underneath the Darth Vader grill at the bottom of the tower. I blew them out with a commercial air compressor. They can be removed manually if you have the patience. So, check for dust everywhere.
If that does not work, depending on your software requirements older Intel Mac's can run OS 10.5. When my G5 died I went to an older G4 and an Intel iMac running 10.5 which worked for my legacy graphics software. --glen

I take it back. I had not noticed that exterior dust trap. Dust bunnies?
It was more like a dust toupée! In any case, it made all the difference.
