As I said before, I am ocassionally watching the new VIZ dub of Sailor
Moon, and am up to episode 89, which is the highest that is available on
their site, and am trying to decide whether to watch the rest of the
episodes subbed (all 200 episodes are available subbed at the VIZ site),
wait until the next season is are dubbed and put on the web site (I
think the next season is dubbed, but will not be put on their website,
at least for free until the season following that is dubbed, but perhaps
episode 89 is the highest that is going to be available for free), or
try to find ep isedes 90..110...uhh..."elsewhere."
To help me make that decision, I have watched about 4 or so of the
subbed version (Sailor Moon Stars, I think), and I have some
comments/questions:
1. The VIZ dub/sub seems to be digitally enhanced over the original.
Even on my relatively low-end TV (720p), at least by today's standards,
the VIZ dub is much brighter and better looking than the old
DIC/Cloverway dub.
2. Kaolinite and the monsters of the day have kept up the Sailor Moon
tradition of "sexy bad guys."
3. In one of the episodes where the black moon clan warns earth about
its invasion plans or whatever, the lines used are from the 5th
Dimension song "Age of Aquarius." I see there as being 4 possibilities:
the voice actress is a big fan of the 5th dimension or at least late
60's R&B and ad-libbed those lines, whoever wrote the dub is a big fan,
those lines are actually the "best" translation of the original
Japanese, or finally, it seems plausible to me that the original
Japanese writer was a big fan, and the actual Japanese lines in the
original were a translation of those lines from the song Age of Aquarius.
I tried to determine if those lines were used in the original
DIC/Cloverway dub, but unless I watch the entire "Black Moon Saga," I
don't think I will find it.
4. In one of the episodes, it shows sailor mars at her school, which is
apparently a Catholic school as the teachers? at least look like they
are Catholic nuns. Is Sailor Mars like Noriko from MSGM and is really
Buddhist, but goes to a Catholic School? Is she actually Catholic?
What is the deal here.
5. Sailor Mar's grandfather says she is the only one that can take over
the temple. What happened to her parents. Did they die? Did they
convert to Christianity or Islam or whatever and can't take over a
Buddhist temple? Are they international jet-setters and simply not
interested? Or what?
