Can anyone recommend backup software solutions for 68k Macs running System 7?

I used either floppy disks or a backup hard drive.

Right. I have the HDD space, but I'm wondering if there was a 90s-era application that would automatically (or semi-automatically via scheduling) perform backups, as an INIT for example.

Said simpler: is there/was there a "Time Machine" sort of capability for 68k machines with System 7?

Dantz Retrospect was the most popular/flexible backup program for classic Mac. I believe Retrospect 4 still ran on 68k, 4.3 was the latest version of that. Looks like the Garden has it.

There was also the Dantz freeware version Diskfit Direct. Retrospect has more features but for a reason I don't remember I liked DiskFit Direct better. From Google it looks like there are a number of download sites.

It's pretty easy if you have a second hard drive the same size or larger. Drag your boot drive's icon to the other drive and wait for everything to copy.
When that's done the second drive will have a Desktop folder and a folder with the name of the drive you dragged onto it.
I did that many times when upgrading to larger drives. Before switching the drives, open the folder with the drive name and drag everything out of it to the root level. Open and close the System folder to bless it. Shut down, re-arrange your cables and SCSI ID settings then boot off the new drive.
Drag everything from the Desktop folder out to the desktop.
If you're wanting a tape backup, you'll need to find an old SCSI tape drive, some tapes and backup software.
I have one of these external SCSI tape drives, but no tapes or software. It stores 12 gig uncompressed. Can't tell from that if it can use standard DAT tapes or not. If it can, it likely would recognize them as 60 meter DDS1, about 4 gig capacity. Best to just use DDS tapes with Media Recognition System. It can use DDS1 2 or 3 type.

Pay shipping and it's yours. http://www.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/S4113B.htm
