I wonder how hard this would be to design. As I have a friend with tons
upon tons of 1.44 MB drives, it would be quite useful to me. Obviously it
would also require firmware.

Okay - there's a controller card, probably with one of those Western
Digital chips or something, and some ROM and logic - this plugs into a
slot in the Apple.

There's a box, prolly could be 3D printed, would probably have a little
PCB in it, plug for a wallwart, couple power connectors, you plug in a
couple readily available PC 1.44 MB floppy drives, then you run a ribbon
cable between the drives and to the card inside the machine. You plug the
box into the wall...

1.44 MB equipment and media is relatively easy for me to come by as
opposed to 360K media. I could absolutely make use of something like
that.

I know about it...

My idea was to make a replacement for which spare parts might be easier to
come by.
