I've got a couple older machines that need their cmos batteries replaced.
Has anyone come up with an alternative to the 1/2aa cmos battery? Is there
any merit to converting to a more common battery (perhaps a CR series watch
battery, or something similar)?

I use CR2032 in all my old macs. Cut a notch out of a piece of fuel line hose to hold the case against one terminal and then use a bent copper strip in the tube to push against the other terminal.

They last a very long time. Shelf life is at least 10 years - I have
pulled quite a few out of old Macs and they still work. Current drain is
usually minimal, they last nearly shelf live. Buy quality ones and get a
spare or two depending on how many machines you have. Shop hard.
Compare prices for the brands you decide are quality. The critical
factor for me is the battery clip that goes over them. It's hard (for
me) to take off without breaking it. I use something to insert between
the battery and the clip to push the clip away from the hole.

So I guess the answer is no. And I have a lot of old CR batteries that
have lower voltage but still work in some Intel boxes. Conversion would
be a pain. Search all of the internet, not just Amazon and ebay (I
don't think Newegg carries them) but use reputable stores, of course. I
have bought them from independent battery dealers but that was probably
a decade ago.

Stay dry up there!

I like this. CR2032's are cheap and plentiful. Any pics available?

Is there any particular reason the stock battery isn't working for
you? They are still a farily common size, we use them at work in
various navigation and communications electronics as well. You could
probably kludge a CR2032 in there, but you'd have to replace it more
often as they are nominally 3.0 V, and most of the service manuals
call for the 3.6 V 1/2AA to be replaced at 2.8 V. There might even be
a few models that wouldn't be happy at the lower voltage/current,
though 2032s are definitely cheaper.

Cost, convenience, and a little bit of novelty. I've got about 10 machines
in need, and always find myself somewhere where the CR is and the 1/2aa
isn't.

I usually buy about 10 of them at a time on eBay, much more cost
effective than a retail outlet. Lithium batteries have a shelf life of
around 10 years, so if you have a few extras you don't have to worry
about them being dead when you need one next.
