G4 Quicksilver 2001 dual 800 MHz power-up problem

August 11, 2016

I recently replaced the CPU with a dual 1G card, original to a 2002 G4. I
have had no problem with this card for several months, although I use this
computer rarely, and

Only fire it up occasionally. It is connected to the power mains through a
panel-mounted Furman voltage protection device.

There are several other upgrades, OWC firewire 800 and USB 2.0 PCI cards,
and the fastest graphics card I could get back in the day. I’ve used this
computer for 15 years.

Failed partition map in external 1T LaCie Rugged drive may have caused this
powering up problem, which I have been able to solve by the usual tricks. I
may have had another external drive attached, and I may also have been
networked to another local computer via Ethernet!

When the computer failed and shut down, here’s the last thing I saw on the
screen: it was filled with numbers, on a black background. From previous
unhappy experience, this may mean that the CPU daughter card has failed.
But I don’t know.

Every time I took out a PCI card, or tried starting with different
peripherals connected/disconnected, I removed the battery for 15 minutes
and/ or reset the CUDA button. Every time I tried to power up the following
sequence occurred:

1) As I held down the power button it lit up for a long second, went dark
and then flashed for a fraction of a second. 2) It emitted a ‘beep’ sound
that I have not heard before. 3) The hard drive was spinning-up and the
fans were on. 4) After several seconds it powered itself down. 5) Pressing
the power button now yielded no activity at all. 6) There was a ‘ticking’
sound, coming from the area of the power supply, which stopped when I
disconnected the power cable.

If I opened the side and looked at the mother board while it was attempting
to start, the Red LED was solid. Then it was blinking after failure to
power-up.

After resetting the CUDA button, taking out the battery, pulling every PCI
card and all but one memory card, trying to start while holding
Command+Control+P+R keys down, and replacing the CPU, I am still at a
quandary.

Today, I tried swapping in the original dual 800 CPU card. I had the video
monitor plugged in. Also the keyboard and the Ethernet cable were attached.
When I held down the start button, the G4 made it’s usuall happu ‘bong’
sound and the power button lit up steady. I turned on the video monitor and
was pleased to see the grey screen with the Apple icon, the usual start-up
display. However, after a few more seconds the G4 powered itself off. I
would guess that it had been on for maybe 10 seconds before shutting down.

I have the original graphics card somewhere. I will try swapping that with
the after-market card that’s in there now when I find it.

Otherwise, I remain flummoxed, and appeal to any advanced G4 users who have
helpful suggestions which I have not already tried.

Thank you,

Stephen Mason

If I remember correctly, I believe these needed a firmware update for the newer CPU to work. This is because 800MHz was the fastest 2001 Quicksilver, there were no 1GHz or faster CPUs then. If you didn’t flash the firmware prior to CPU replacement the dual 1Ghz card isn’t going to be recognized. If I am correct, and you don’t have a disc with the required firmware, finding a copy of the correct firmware for download may be very difficult, I’d imagine the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine would be your go to.

It’s possible the Sonnet firmware will add the correct support needed for the CPU even if the CPU isn’t Sonnet. Sonnet supported up to 1.6GHz dual, and 1GHz should probably also be supported.:
