I would appreciate some tech advice

I have some Macs I use in system 7.6 and 8.1

I need to continue to use them and those system version due to legacy software I use

But I also have an I Mac

It's blue and all-in-one Mac with screen integrated

I need to be able to have an external hard drive go back and forth between my older Macs and the I Mac

The external hard drive is 18 gigabytes and has system 8.1 on it.

The problem is, it is a SCSI hard drive that hooks to the older Mac but the I MAC only has USB ports

What gizmos are available for me to hook a SCSI hard drive to an I MAC that has USB ports - that is the 1st question

Secondly, can I "startup" this IMAC (that has system 9.2 on it) from the external hard drive running system 8.1?\

Thanks for help - very kind of anyone to share information

If you don't mind, can you send me a text message to come to this board and read your response

Text to: 760-808-1387

Thanks again

There are USB-SCSI adapters out there but 1) they're really expensive and
2) I have no idea how reliable they are. You'll still need an external SCSI
drive enclosure and power supplyas well, so based on eBay prices you're
talking at least $150-200.

I would also recommend networking for file transfer - this will let you use
the iMac as a file server and the other macs will be able to use it just
like another hard drive. What are the older mac models are you running OS
7.6 & 8.1 on? Are the computers close enough you can run a cable between
them?

Whether you can boot your iMac with OS 8.1 depends on multiple things:

1 - Tray-loading iMacs can't boot from USB (
http://lowendmac.com/1999/imac-rev-d/), so booting from an external drive
is a no-go
2 - which blue iMac - if you have the original Bondi Blue iMac yes. If you
have a later Blueberry color probably not, they shipped with OS 8.5.
Everymac.com can usually get you a good idea of OS compatibility - select a
machine model page and scroll down near the bottom where it says
"Pre-Installed MacOS":

www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html

The more interesting question is why do you want to boot OS 8.1 - for
compatibility?

OK - got it - so the older Macs use a gizmo that plugs into the back of the Mac - called PhoneNet and then a phone cable inserts into the PhoneNet and goes to the other older Mac. I didn't look yet - how will I hook a PhoneNet to the I Mac - does that work. AS I said, I haven't looked yet - the "connections" are on the side of the IMac.

THAN KS for your answers. I respond in between below:

I can't determine (as yet) how to have a PhoneNet cable situation between the Mac 7200 and the IMAC

Perhaps. It depends on what you mean by "older Macs."

Only the oldest don't have an ethernet port (or a version Apple called
AAUI). You may need an adapter to provide a "standard" connection to
the AAUI for a cat5 cable that you can connect to a "dumb hub" to
create your network.

For this connection, I would use a "dumb hub" and cat5 ethernet
cables. Both computers have "standard" ethernet ports.

Yes, what Ken said. Your 7200 should have an ethernet jack, you would
connect the iMac and 7200 together that way. You can keep the phonenet
connection between the old beige boxes, but if all have ethernet, use a hub
and do it all that way - it will be way faster for file transfers!

If you have any machines that do not have an ethernet or AAUI port, you can
use a piece of software called "LocalTalk Bridge" to connect the ethernet
and phonenet sections of the network. I had a similar setup for a number of
years, using an SE/30 with ethernet card to allow the rest of the network
to access an ancient DEC laser printer.

The 350Mhz Blueberry (Tealish color) iMac probably will not work with OS
8.1, those shipped with 8.6. If you have the dark blue one (Indigo) that
shipped with OS 9.0.4. Office should be able to run on any of those
versions and some folks have gotten MORE working with OS9, though a quick
google search tells me it's more stable on OS 8 (including 8.5. & 8.6).

Does that software not work on OS 9?

As long as you are using AppleTalk via PhoneNet on the older
computers, you can get a PhoneNet to Ethernet bridge that will allow
your iMac to act as a fileserver for the other computers. If you can't
find one on eBay (such as the Farallon Ethermac iPrint adapter) let me
know, I may have an extra one laying around but I'm in the process of
moving and have no idea where it is. I used it with a G4 Tower, to act
as file server for various old Macs running System 7. It's been a
while since I played around with it, but I think you can even use
certain versions of OS X that have AppleTalk capability as a server.
The setup is pretty simple, you just plug one end into the PhoneNet
network, and the other end into the computer or an Ethernet switch. In
addition to file sharing, I was even able to use an OS X Leopard
machine as a "bridge" to have Windows 7 computers print to an old
LaserWriter II. So, if you're doing any sort of networking with older
Macs, such a device can be a pretty versatile tool.
