I recently downloaded PaintMagic and can't figure out how to actually *draw*. It starts up with the options, which I can get again by pressing F1, but, when I enter the drawing screen, neither the emulated joystick nor the cursor keys (joystick disabled) respond. I tried the joystick in both Ports 1 and 2. I'm using WinVice 2.4 x64. Can anybody help me out? :(

Hi,

joystick port 2 should work
(tested at the moment)

*** VICE Version 2.4.7 ***
OS compiled for: Linux glibc 2.11
GUI compiled for: NATIVE
CPU compiled for: AMD64/x86_64
Compiler used: GCC-4.5.0
Current OS: Linux 3.0.101-99-desktop (glibc 2.11.3)
Current CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor

you have to plug in the (usb)joystick-adaptor before starting vice
and maybe configure vice to use them before loading paintmagic

but:
maybe similar to coalapainter, which was out there
in versions for joystick, the "coala-pad" (some input device
like a small plate, on which you could draw with a special pen
(have never used by myselve, but a friend has had one, and brought
it to me some years in the past to archive it with all my other
c64 stuff) and there where a version for paddles out there -
if i remember correct)

maybe you have to use a other input device or a other version
of the software.

ps: try a 2 player game (maybe save newyork) to
check if your joystick's(adaptors) work at all

Well...the games work. :( I *really* want to draw multi-color images on the C64 emulator--especially since I tweaked the colors. :)

There is an option somewhere to (dis)allow key-joystick. Toggle it to see
if joystick via keyboard works then.

Depending on what is set up - you also have to define keys before that -
you may experience that keys used for the joystick don't produce any or
wrong characters on the screen.

I use a Unix based operating system, which means I get laid almost as often
as I have to reboot my computer.

I am aware of those settings. Joystick in Port 2 is on, key set 2 is used and mapped to the cursor keys and right Ctrl, and keyboard joystick is on. My games work.... (?)

It works now!!! :D I don't know why it wasn't working before! Maybe I was doing something else with the emulator before running it. :( Sorry for wasting your time. :(

BTW, can PaintMagic use the mouse?

You mean all games (or applications using a joystick in general) work but
PaintMagic? Then I'm out of ideas.

I think you missed my last two posts. :( I got it to work as expected! Maybe I was using it after something else in the emulator and didn't fix the settings. It's a good thing I don't have it auto-save settings at exit.
