Dual 2.5 MHz (2004), LCS

Went to wake my G5 this morning and found it had shut off during the night.
When I hit the power button it would click on then click off in less than
one second. The power light comes on and quickly fades. It repeated this
problem after several attempts to start.

I reset the SMU button using the Apple knowledge base article as reference.
Put it back together and hit the power button; this time one click and the
power light remained on, no fan noise, no chime.

Tried SMU reset again this time removing the PRAM battery and got back to
the click on click off situation.

Oh, I also tried reseating the cable from the power button to the
motherboard but forgot to test the PRAM battery voltage, which probably
does not matter.

My only guess is power supply failure. It there anything else to try. Right
now it sits unplugged with PRAM battery removed. I will try again Thursday
morning.

Does your G5 have an Apple Cinema Display attached? try disconnecting it and plugging in a regular VGA monitor.

This happened to a prof here when the power supply for his 24” Cinema Display died. Really weird.

(He ended up going through 2 of the power supplies before he made Apple give him one from a 30”..no more dead power supplies after that. The 30” ps is noticeably beefier than the 24”)

The monitor is a Hannspree and is connected to the G5's DVI video port. Tried disconnecting everything expect the power cord; it just clicks on then off. Looks likes the power supply needs to be replaced. --glen

You can find the G5 power supply pinout diagrams on this site that shows how to rebuild the power supply.

The G5 power supplies can be expensive, or hard to find, so in addition to DIY repair, there’s other sites that show how to convert a standard ATX power supply to work in the G5 as a lower cost, more readily available kludge solution.

Thanks, lot of good info, particularly the pinout diagram.
I do have a "spare" PS from another G5 2.5 MHz LCS that was severely damage in shipping. Don't know if the damage included that PS. I found a couple of YouTube videos on replacing and taking apart the G5. Looks a little daunting but at least a have another dead G5 to practice on.
Recently sold off all my old Mac's except for one G4. Transferred the critical G5 files to that G4 so I'm back in business. And I finally got to use that USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE adapter I bought an couple of years ago!
Just when I thought I was done tinkering with Mac's now I have another project. --glen
