Having just introduced my B&W G3 PowerMac to its first non-CRT display,
I've hit a problem. It's an AOC 2050 20" monitor with a native
resolution of 1600x900.
In OSX 10.4 (via a drive moved from my now deceased G3 iMac) and MacOS
9.2.2 it works fine in this resolution (looks great), but in MacOS 8.6 I
can't get anything higher than 1024x768 and nothing in 16:9 format, just
4:3.
Can 8.6 handle widescreen monitors? Has anybody got one running at
1600x900, etc. The display control panel shows "2050" in 8.6, so it
should be getting the native resolution back from the monitor.

The resolution is normally a function of the hardware & hardware drivers. Since your unspecified video card supports 1600x900 in 10.4.11 & 9.2.2, it means the hardware does support the desired resolution, but that OS 8.6 is lacking the required software driver. You could try substituting the driver from OS 9.2.2 and see if it loads correctly in OS 8.6. I don’t understand why you’d need OS 8.6 when OS 9.2.2 appears to work, but perhaps there is a reason.

Partly due to me still running an old application or game from time to
time that won't work in 9.x. I also have a "QuickDraw GX" extension set
in 8.6 that I can activate via Conflict Catcher and I'm not sure QD GX
works in 9.x. Plus I like 8.6 :-)
Sorry...I should have specified the graphics card - it's the original
ATi Rage 128.
I thought both my setups were running the same, latest versions of the
Rage 128 driver for pre-OSX, but your reply made me double-check and I
was wrong. The 8.6 extensions are slightly older. If I can't find any
newer ones to download I'll try the 9.2.2 ones.

There’s an extension, iirc it’s called ‘switchres’? That allows you to select ‘unsupported’ resolutions; I used it back in the 8.6 daysto support a larger monitor.

I tried switching in the 9.2.2 ATi extensions...still the same 4:3
resolutions. While I was Googling, I found a couple of recent threads on
the macos9lives forum discussing the same issue with Rage 128/Radeon
cards in G3s running 8.6. They hadn't found a solution either despite
trying all sorts of extension/driver combinations.
Not important enough to spend much more time on it.
