Hi again everyone :)

I am figuring up what capacitors I need to order for all the macs I have, I opened up a powermac 6500 and some of the capacitors read 100 6S 7P4

Just wondering if anyone knew what those ones where?

If anyone just happens to know the capacitors for the 6500/225 that would be nice, then I could double check.

Thanks.

On Page 1, look for the box labelled 'Marking' near the bottom of the page.
Yep, can't argue with Dylan.

100 microFarad 6.3V Hi temp.
7P4 is the lot or batch number used to identify the manufacturing date and location. In case there's a recall.

Keith

If you are in the USA, DigiKey or Mouser will give you good prices and fast service. Sticking to brand names is also wise (Rubycon, Panasonic, Nichicon, etc). Price breaks go with the number you order. I’ve actually had it work out to be cheaper to order more than I need at times.

I'm getting them for a few computers. It is rather difficult to find the 1uf capacitor for the Mac classics.

I'm getting them for a few computers. It is rather difficult to find the 1uf capacitor for the Mac classics.

I recommend against installing capacitors with leads in place of the
surface mount capacitors.

People have done it in the past, but in my opinion there are several
disadvantages.

The biggest is that soldering a capacitor with leads to surface mount pads
creates a lever which can accidentally tear the pads off of the circuit
board. Additionally, I find it more awkward to get the leads to lay flat
on the pads than it is to just solder a surface mount cap in place.

When soldering a surface mount cap in place:

1) first remove all the old solder from both pads with good desoldering
braid such as chemtronics chemwik.
2) Thoroughly clean the area with alcohol, flux remover or other
solvents.
3) Tin one pad of the two (only one).
4) Carefully position the capacitor in place on the pads.
5) Gently press down on the top of the cap with something like a flat blade
screwdriver or the eraser a the end of a pencil or other blunt tool.
6) Apply a hot soldering pencil to the pad which you earlier tinned.
Apply heat until that side of the capacitor sinks into the solder and rests
flat on the pad.
7) Remove the soldering pencil.
8) After a few moments for the solder to harden, remove the tools pressing
the top of the capacitor.
9) Solder the other terminal of the capacitor the way one normally would
with pencil and solder.
10) Clean again.

Apple used 1uF, 50V almost everywhere where they used 1uF. However, they
seem to have done that for inventory reasons or some such. 50V isn't
needed in those places. I have a couple thousand 1uF, 35V surface mount
tantalum caps in the 'B' size which is a good size to replace the
electrolytic cans.

Opened up my mac classic, mac classic ii, and mac se, seems they do take 50v. Sorry about that, guess that is what I get for trusting a website.

Sorry, but I just cannot afford the websites you two are recommending, buying in bulk is not viable for me right now so ebay will have to do. Here are the panasonic capacitors I have picked out.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/220853167321

http://www.ebay.com/itm/381093683561

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321736487444

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121233694077

http://www.ebay.com/itm/360645605739

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121238446382

The 33uf and 1uf for the mac se are the ones with the leads as it had ones with leads in it.

And my poor mac classic had a blown up battery with acid all over the place, weird thing is it was the only one that actually worked out of the three. I cleaned it a bit with some alcohol and will change the battery.

Do you guys think I should change the capacitors on everything? Like in the powermac 6500 there are some on the internet cards and such, and in the all in ones there are the bigger capacitors on the second boards. Or should I just stick with the main/motherboards?

I sell assortments (customer's choice) of surface mount tantalum capacitors
for $10 shipped within the USA (outside the USA add actual shipping costs).
For $10 the customer gets 15 capacitors of their choice from my list.
Additional caps beyond that are $.50 each.

That may still be too pricey for you, but thought I'd let you know. I
started doing this in 2007 because so many folks have difficulty sourcing
the replacements on their own.

Also, over on 68kmla.org the user Uniserver (Charles on LEM, I think)
provides a board repair service for those who do not feel comfortable
switching out their own caps.

The caps I typically have available are as follows, although I believe I'm
out of the 100uF, 10V.

=====Capacitors=======
Surface Mount:
47 uF 16V AVX TAJD476K016R Size D
1 uF 35V KEMET T491B105M035 Size B

22 uF 25V Vishay 293D226X9025D2T Size D
100 uF 10V Vishay 293D107X9010D2T Size D

Axial (with leads coming out the ends):

470 uF 16V, 105C Axial Electrolytic Capacitor (approx. 3/4" long X 3/8"

470 uF 50V, 105C Axial Electrolytic Capacitor (approx. 1" long X 1/2"
diameter)

I have to get around 122 capacitors, so probably eBay will have to do for this time. I have to replace the 1/2 aa batteries to. If I had a job and wasn't in college I could probably do the other options, maybe when I get the fancy job in web design I'll be able to do some of this other stuff ;)

By the next time I need capacitors, or when I get another vintage Mac I know where to get them though. Some of these are a pain to find on some of these sites.

Do you think the ones I linked earlier would work?

They'll work. Panasonic and Nichicon are good brands. Matsushita is now known as Panasonic.
Hope you get them all going.

Sorry, but I just cannot afford the websites you two are recommending, buying in bulk is not viable for me right now so ebay will have to do. Here are the panasonic capacitors I have picked out.

I sell assortments (customer's choice) of surface mount tantalum capacitors for $10 shipped within the USA (outside the USA add actual shipping costs).   For $10 the customer gets 15 capacitors of their choice from my list.    Additional caps beyond that are $.50 each.

That may still be too pricey for you, but thought I'd let you know.  I started doing this in 2007 because so many folks have difficulty sourcing the replacements on their own.

Also, over on 68kmla.org the user Uniserver (Charles on LEM, I think) provides a board repair service for those who do not feel comfortable switching out their own caps.

The caps I typically have available are as follows, although I believe I'm out of the 100uF, 10V.

=====Capacitors=======
Surface Mount:
47 uF 16V AVX TAJD476K016R Size D
1 uF 35V KEMET T491B105M035 Size B
10 uF 20V AVX TAJB106M020RNJ Size B
22 uF 25V Vishay 293D226X9025D2T Size D
100 uF 10V Vishay 293D107X9010D2T Size D

Axial (with leads coming out the ends):
220 uF 50V, 105C Axial Electrolytic Capacitor
470 uF 16V, 105C Axial Electrolytic Capacitor (approx. 3/4" long X 3/8" diameter)
470 uF 50V, 105C Axial Electrolytic Capacitor (approx. 1" long X 1/2" diameter)
===================================

=======Rectifiers============
MR824 400V, 5A, Fast Recovery -- For Mac Plus Analog Board
========================

==========Misc.===========
Bourns Filter 4120R-601-250/201 $3 w/ capacitor order, $3 each + $3 total shipping by themselves.
replaces 115-0002, 4120R-601-250/201, or P9120M115-0006
1/2AA Battery Holder $2.50 w/ capacitor order
120 pin right angle adapter for SE/30; AMP/TE Connectivity # 5650874-5 $5 with capacitor order, $10 by itself.

AFAIK, Matsushita has always used Panasonic as an alternate brand name; the two refer to the same Japanese company. Panasonic is a rather more consumer-friendly name in the West.

Some people tend to snerk and giggle at the sushi in the middle of the
name, or take the SU off and add one letter to the right.
