Hello all,

My first time posting to this list -- enlighten me if I've done it
incorrectly.

Selling a Macintosh Classic Model M0421 for an elderly friend of mine.
Boots up to grey screen with mouse pointer. I have not tried any system
disks in it . . .

If you are interested, please post reply --

I'll give you 40 including shipping for it if you want... That is a fair
offer...

yours.

Jane,
The computer should boot to a desktop as the Classic had an internal 40MB hard drive. You've stated that it boots to a grey screen with a pointer. That means the operating system is not loading and that indicates a possible problem with the internal drive.
I'm in the UK so I am not interested - the shipping alone will be uneconomical.
However, I paid $30 for a Classic in this condition. Someone tried to sell it on eBay for about $90 more because 'it switched on'. That $30 included the mouse and keyboard.
A photograph would go a long way to let folks see the condition of this Classic. A lot of these Macs have yellowed over the years and the insides are full of dust and fluff which acts as an insulator and causes severe overheating.
What else is being offered with the Classic? Mouse, keyboard, printer, software disks, books, the original box? A sharp photograph of everything for sale and maybe close ups to show cracks or other damage would help as well. Perhaps if you can clarify what is being sold, it will help to establish a price bracket.
What do you think it is worth? Or rather, how much do you want for it? Start there.
It may have cost between $1,000 and $1,500 back in the day but it's worth a lot less today. Did it have a memory card installed to boost it to 2-, 3- or 4MB? The Macintosh Classics are not as rare as you might imagine and although they were introduced 6 years after the original Mac, they weren't a big step up with their 68000 processors.
Hope this helps you in some way.
Regards,
Keith

The classic is also unique in that it can boot from a "disk" in its ROM.
Cmd-opt-X-O. You can't add extensions past the minimal ones in that
folder, but it can get you going, or let you bless another system folder.

Not so unique any more. :-)

Check out the work that's been done over at 68kmla.org. One fellow has
developed a programmable ROM SIMM and another fellow determined how to add
files to available spare space and modify the boot code so that other old
Macs can be made to have a version of the OS built into the ROMs. Other
than the SE/30, the Compact Macs don't use a ROM SIMM, but work is
proceeding on a version for the socketed ROM machines as well.
