Hi Guys,

So I feel like reading some of the old InCiders on Apple2Online (here's the link: http://apple2online.com/index.php?p=1_70_inCider-Magazine ).

The files all open fine on my PC (though they say "SECURED" on the Acrobat titlebar), my Goodreader PDF app on my iPad keeps asking for the PDF Password, and the file won't open without them.

So, the questions are: What is (or are) the password(s) for these files? Why are there passwords on these files anyway?

Thanks,
Warr

Did you click on the link titled "Reading PDF files" in the column on the left?

Here's what it says:

Reading PDF Files
The PDF files listed with a red heart symbol before their name are originals that were created for A2OL by Dr. Kenneth Buchholz, unless otherwise noted. The PDFs were created in PDF version 1.7 with 256-bit AES encryption protecting the files only against editing; no password is required for reading or printing the files. If you find you're receiving errors when trying to read/print the files, please make sure that:
(1) the PDF app you are using supports PDF version 1.7 with 256-bit AES encryption. Many free apps currently do not support PDF v 1.7/256-bit AES encyption, so if you continue to have problems in opening A2OL PDFs, you may need to get a different PDF Reader (vs a PDF Editor) app that does support PDF v 1.7/256-bit AES encyption.
(2) your PDF app is not set, by default, to attempt to open PDFs in editing mode. Most PDF Editors do! Many free PDF editors are set to open PDFs in editing mode by default. Make sure your app's default is set to open PDFs in read-only (and print-only) mode.

There was an interesting discussion on this subject a while back. I recall
there was talk about the watermarking going on too.

Ken certainly has added some nice scans to his site lately (including some
of the Beagle Bros TimeOut Manuals heretofore unscanned), and given the
large size of some of the materials and the time it must take him to scan
them well I can understand his desire to ensure that his site receives
attribution for his work, even when the files themselves wind up on other
sites.

Having said that, I've got to add that I'm no fan of pdf encryption method
he is now using. On a PPC/Tiger 10.4.11 Mac neither Apple's Preview,
GhostScript 9.02, nor Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.5.5 (the last version for
PPC/Tiger) will touch his latest pdf files, and I suspect, therefore, that
SpotLight (under Tiger) can't even index their contents.

Strangely, Acrobat Reader 9.5.5 claims to support PDF v 1.7/256-bit AES
encryption but it certainly won't open those pdf files on either of the
machines I've tried it on.

While I know the 'solution' is to use a more modern Mac or Windows machine
(somewhat ironic, isn't it?), and I can, I prefer to do 'Apple II' things on
an older PPC Mac able to run Classic and Bernie and so it's just not as
convenient for me. I do recognize that opening those files is probably not
an issue for most folks, though. Or is it?

My, how generous he is to offer such strong protection for someone else's work.

This will just force someone else to duplicate the comparatively small effort he has contributed to making these available.

Cheers,
Nick.

Preview on Mac OS X Mavericks can't even open them which also means iBooks reader can't open them either. I am not sure why such an onerous encryption scheme has been used. I have an Adobe free mac so don't want to install Acrobat Reader, Flash etc. Looks like I won't be reading these :-(

I also noticed that it throws up a bit of a roadblock when you try to run it
through OCR. PDF-XChange Viewer includes OCR functionality, but it's grayed
out when you load one of these files. If you print to another PDF (with
something like CutePDF) and load the regenerated PDF, OCR is available.
