I just posted a new video to YouTube demonstrating a 25-node AppleCrate
resulting from connecting the AppleCrate II to the AppleCrate I.
I'd been wanting to do this for some time, but never cleared enough desk
space to make it possible. ;-)
Sometimes more really is better. ;-)

Hi Michael, awesome video.
I didn't know you were working on a top secret Apple II bitcoin miner ;D

That's a case where less is more. ; - )
Great video! You've got your own "Connection Machine". Have you ever tried using the AppleCrates for distributed rendering? A Mandelbrot set, say ...
BTW, NadaNet, AppleCrates and DAC522 form the best ever Apple hardware hack IMO. I can't think of anything that comes close.
Cheers,
Nick.

Mind. Blown. :)
Just like Nick says, this really is the pinnacle of Apple ][ engineering. Really awesome stuff!
Cheers Michael

Thanks, Alistair and Nick. ;-)
Truth is, one thing leads to another, and after a while, there's a bunch of
stuff. ;-)
All of my projects are driven by curiosity about what the real limits are
to what can be done with 1MHz Apples and ingenuity. It's a kick when I can
accomplish more than it's reasonable to expect!
A parallel Mandelbrot plotter was one of my first parallel programs, since
it is so "embarrassingly parallel". Each pixel's computation is independent
of every other, so decomposition into parallel work units is unconstrained.
I compute a whole HGR line (280 pixels) as a work unit, which takes about
2-3 minutes, so communication is a negligible part of the time, and the
speedup is linear in the number of machines.
What takes one Apple about 14 hours to compute is completed by 24 machines
in about 35 minutes.
These times are based on an Applesoft computation, since it was just
intended as a demo, but, since it spends all its time in a tight loop doing
floating-point multiplies and adds, I wouldn't expect more than a factor of
2x-3x from converting it to assembly calling ROM FP routines.

Ok, I give. There are a LOT of Michael J Mahons in the world and they
are ALL on YouTube. :-) I found some videos Sean posted a bit back
about the AppleCrate, though.
Where's the video you're referring to here?
Cheers,
m
