As of today, Borderline BBS has returned as the world's only dial-up BBS running on a C64! So dust off your modem and give it a call at 1-951-652-1690! Running 24/7 at 300/1200 baud. It's a truly 80s telecommunications experience! :)

I only have cell phone service. I connect to the internet using my apartment building's wireless. Anybody know what I need to do to connect to a dial up BBS?

Yes. Order a hard phone line.

Yup... Pretty much what Ian said. ;)

Unfortunately, Commodore BBS software doesn't give you the option of both dial-up and Telnet. You have to choose one or the other. And there aren't any other dial-up BBSs left that run on Commodore computers. So anyone who has a modem for their Commodore has nothing to use it for... until today. Now you can get that 100% authentic BBS experience of dialing the phone number, hearing the modem connect sounds, and watching the text scroll by at either 300 or 1200 baud speeds when you call Borderline BBS. :)

But... You'll need a phone line to make it work.

We had our first caller today, so the BBS has been official tested and it's working. :)

Isn't it possible to dial-in with the cellphone? It should be able to
handle 300 baud AFSK, shouldn't it? I recall even sending G3 faxes over gsm
cellphone so why not the 300 or even 1200bd? The tricky part might be to
get a modern cellphone to talk serial over wire (rather than Bluetooth for
example) but some 10 years old, wired serial capable phone junk should be
available for free these days.

I just used a VOIP service and dialed in from Europe, got a
carrier. Haven't heard something like that for decades! Very cool. :-)

Anyway, because I have no POTS I wonder if it would be possible to
somehow patch the signal I get when I dial in via VOIP through to the
computer. I would install a terminal application then.

Even cooler if you could somehow feed emulators, like VICE or UAE, with
that...

The last time I was running Borderline BBS a few years back, there were some people that were able to get a connection using VoIP that was "good enough" to call in with. They had to tweak the settings on their VoIP phone adapter, if I recall correctly. And there were people who called using WinVICE, too. I believe there's a way to get it to use the PCs internal modem. You can also try using C64TERM, which was written in 1991 for MS-DOS. There's a link to download that on my website at http://cottonwoodbbs.dyndns.org.

Thanks Andrew. "Problem" is I have Linux only, plus my VOIP phone is just
software.

But Linux might open some options I'd say, although I don't know of
any. May be routing what would come out of the speaker to a virtual
modem, which then could feed applications like terminal emulations or
emulators which may be can deal with this data input.

A good thing that my VOIP application was not terminating the call in the
30 seconds I tried it. Not knowing there is no voice service on the other
thing. So it could actually works at this level.
