Well, IMHO yes and no. They have worked ok for me, I've used them
with UAE and VICE on Linux for a long time without problems.

But the build quality of those joysticks is utter crap.

Back in 2005 I bought a bunch of those joysticks (not from Amazon
though). Of the eight (8) joysticks I ordered, four (4) were dead
on arrival. Ok, I RMA'd the borken ones and got them replaced with
good ones. Another one broke after a few weeks. These joysticks
simply cannot take any rough handling unlike the original C64
version could.

They did come in pretty boxes, with ribbons and all. :)

I'd recommend using a Stelladaptor and a real c64 joystick. Stelladaptor
converts Atari-style joystick port to USB. Unfortunately finding one may
be difficult.

I think there was another alternative to Stelladapter but I really cannot
remember what it was called or where to get one.

There are all kinds of instructions on the web for making DIY PC
adapters for Atari-style joysticks, but they're usually meant for the
old-style 15-pin PC joystick ports, or for the "legacy" parallel
(printer) ports:

<http://google.com/search?q=atari+joystick+pc>

An alternative would be buying a digital USB gamepad (or even the
aforementioned USB version of Competition Pro!) and cannibalizing its
USB interface electronics to make an adapter for a "real" Atari style
joystick. That should even be easier than the above-mentioned
alternative, as all that is needed is removing the circuit board from
its original housing and tapping onto the electrical contacts for the
existing switches...

(One could, for intance, add a male DE-9 connector inside the original
housing - this way allowing a daisy-chain connection to a "real"
Atari-style joystick - or ditch the original controller altogether and
only save its circuit board / electronics - perhaps rehousing it in a
separate box.)

But all that requires soldering skills, nonetheless... so these are not
easy off-the-shelf solutions.

Come to think of it, the keyboard controller in a USB or PS/2 keyboard
could be used in a similar manner. Just ditch the actual keyboard and
solder the DE-9 connector on the contacts of the controller circuit
board.
