I have my SE/30 running System 7.1 right now, and it all works great
(thanks again, everyone!), but I was wondering...

How would I go about having a second System folder on it for System 6.0.8?
(without resorting to booting from floppy. ;) )

It has one drive with one partition currently. Can I just run the 6.0.8
installer from floppy? Will that upset it?

I'm sure at least one of you out there has done something similar to this.
:)

You just have the two folders. When you place both a finder and system
file in a folder, it "unblesses" the old blessed folder and blesses the new
one.

Then just take a finder out and back in on another folder.

I ran 6 and 7 like this from the alpha release of 7 (which was more stable
than any MS Windows I ever used) until I switched to full time unix in 95
or 96

Also there was a utility or two that did the blessing for you, I don't
recall a name though.

Excellent. Can I just run the System 6 installer and it will create a
second System folder, or should i rename/move the System 7 folder
aside first, or some other method? (which works best in your
experience?)

From my own long-time memory, no machine to check which of these works with 6/7/8 system, but try these:

1) cmd-opt open system folder. That blesses it.
2) in control panel/chooser choose startup drive then start it up
3) drag system folder (smiley face mac) to desktop. close system folder. drop smiley face mac into system folder. then restart.

YMMV - my memory may be off. google is also your friend here.

There was a program called System Picker that I used to run it on my SE/30 many years ago.

http://classicmacs.org/2008/12/system-picker/

Here's a link to an article that mentions the program and refers to another article that Dan Knight at lowendmac wrote. Hope that is enough breadcrumbs to lead you to the program.

Jon.

Gee, the Doc mentions being a 'Nix fellow. Isn't it possible to use a GRUB boot-loader-like-setup for the MacOS of those vintages?

Unfortunately, booting Linux on ancient Macs usually involves booting a Mac System part-way first. The bootloader is a MacOS Extension.

There's a (relatively) new project called EMILE that mostly replaces the
need for Mac OS to boot Linux. I think it can also be tweaked to handle
NetBSD. It's a little finicky at the moment and doesn't really handle
dual booting with Mac OS very cleanly from a HD, but it does allow a
completely Mac OS-free 68k Linux box if you want it. I still stick with
Penguin booter on my LC 475 though as I enjoy the dual bootiness it allows.

Personal experience:

I actually use an SE/30 as a file server for my Linux and OS 10.3.9 or earlier Macs. There I have installed a few 8 GB SCSI disks which the SE/30 handles well except that I need to partition them into sizes that don't put a strain on disk addressing.

It's trivial to put a different System Folder on any partition and I can select which partition, seen as a named disk by the SE/30, to use as the startup disk.

Control panel, change startup disk, restart. No problemo.

Couldn't a custom ROM be developed (or patched) that would add the

Personal experience:

I actually use an SE/30 as a file server for my Linux and OS 10.3.9 or
earlier Macs. There I have installed a few 8 GB SCSI disks which the SE/30
handles well except that I need to partition them into sizes that don't put
a strain on disk addressing.

It's trivial to put a different System Folder on any partition and I can
select which partition, seen as a named disk by the SE/30, to use as the
startup disk.

Control panel, change startup disk, restart. No problemo.

Just a follow up on this. I ended up doing it last night. It was actually
quite easy once I learned how to do it. A key part of it was getting
"System Picker"... thanks, Jpoliti!

- SE30 has 7.1 on it.
- Make the two 6.0.8 floppies (1.4 meg)
- Boot from the 6.0.8 floppy
- on the hard drive, make a folder called "Finder Folder" (or whatever) in
the "System Folder
- Move the Finder into there.
- Rename "System Folder" to "System 7.1"
- Run the 6.0.8 installer
- When it is done, rename the "System Folder" to "System 6.0.8"
- Move the System 7 finder back into the System 7 folder.
- Dropped "System Picker" onto the hard drive
- Run System Picker and pick System 7.1
- Disks get ejected, it boots 7.1.

It did have to rebuild the desktop when it booted into 7.1. I'm not sure
if it will have to do this every time I switch, as I have one data point so
far.

Thanks to all y'all for getting me going in the right direction. :D

Cheers;

I used to run MacBSD (which was NetBSD's mac branch) on a machine or two in
the 90s. I don't remember actually needing one for that, but it's been a
while . . . maybe I did.

And I recall the discovery that X *could* run on the virtual FPU rather
than a real one. Someone got interrupted and left his machine on
overnight, and a day later X was running . . .

But a LILO or grub on an ancient mac? *shudder*
