You're complaining about 2 books costing $17.38? Are you on drugs? Mapping the Commodore 64 is one of the most useful books around books around, so it makes sense that it wouldn't go for $4.99. Besides, it was __morsepa8vxp__ that outbid you anyways. Why not start a thread titled *"murse-p@8vxp sux"*?

Grow up.

Mapping the Commodore 64 is a great book. You should have bid more. ;)

If you don't mind a copy in electronic form, search the following URL for
"mapping" and you'll find it in text and PDF form.

http://project64.c64.org/misc/index.html

Hope that helps.

That's the frustrating thing though, he doesn't value them in the way many
of the rest of us would.

He'll probably never even read the books, just store them in his guest house
in a carefully labelled box, and wait for the price to go up so he can
resell them in several years ;-(

Gosh. I am SO SURPRISED - someone actually understands.

Maybe we're wrong. Maybe all of you do understand and either don't
care or you have a deep sense of karmic whatever (ie things will all
work out, etc..) or believe in some kind of capitalistic religion -
the almighty dollar (trust in it and all is right).

I don't. It disturbs me more that regulars around here don't care than
worldlams little buying spree.

What do you think - the less you care the more you care?

If rich guys were running around, buying everything up and g64
archiving the disks, scanning the manuals etc - I wouldn't be upset.
If some people weren't buying every single instance of a rare item up
- it certainly wouldn't be upsetting.

I don't believe in karma and I really don't believe people reap what
they sow all the time. Heck, most of the time shit just rolls down
hill.

Personally, worldlam - I have nothing against you and you might be the
right person to have all that stuff. Good for you. This is really
going out to the people who don't care.

You know - I'd really like to see a company get started doing reprints
of all these books. Brand new books, half the price. That's a deal.
This hunting and haggling on ebay is stupid.

Nothing boneheaded about it. The problem is you keep saying "I can't compete" when you should be saying "How can I compete?" Until you ask yourself how you can compete, you never will.

Compete for what? Books I already own?

This isn't about competition. This is about waste.

This is also about everyone's right to complain.

So what then -- we all come to you and ask you which one of us
"deserves" to have one of these books, and whoever has the book has to
simply give it to that person regardless of how much they are willing
to pay?

That's a completely boneheaded ideology -- but they're still trying to
make it work in Cuba. Good luck with that.

Exactly. The problem here is that while most of us traded warez as
kids, with the idea that it's all free for anyone who learns how to
get it, only SOME of us grew up and realized how life actually works.

People who are willing to compete for things in the economy will
always have the advantage over the sorry losers who think they
"deserve" things.

There is no "waste" here. The "waste" would have been if the person
who owned the book just dumped it in the trash rather than seeing if
anyone was willing to buy it to keep it around.

That wasn't the reason for this thread but I certainly do.

Abolish IP and patent laws.

Not sure what that would accomplish here, since the book you are
bitching about being sold is available in text form on the web
already.

But, since you brought it up...

Why not move to Cuba? I mean, I know the pickin's for a utopian
socialist society are gettin' mighty slim these days, what with the
Soviet Union collapsing and China turning into a quasi "totalitarian
capitalist" state, but you guys still got Cuba! I'm sure lots of
great books and software are developed over there, since they don't
have all those pesky intellectual property and patent issues to worry
about.

Your statement is that the whole world except Cuba enforces patent
laws.

Your argument is that societies advance faster due to patent and IP
laws. Maybe you're insinuating that the stricter the enforcement, the
faster civilization advances.

I hope you're still paying royalties to 'the family that invented the
wheel'.

Isn't Bill Gates proof positive this system doesn't work?

Excellent health care system in Cuba, and free too.

Let them try, no harm in that.

The US should look at it's own internal problems before passing judgement on
others.

Nothing is free. Nothing. The only difference is how you pay for it.

Ask the millions of people who died in the USSR from forced starvation by Lenin and Stalin if there's any harm in it. Oh, yeah. You can't ask them... THEY ARE DEAD.

This is left-wing-speak for "Don't shine a light on our problems". The truth is that American's are typically quite happy with our lifestyle, economic models and government processes. The great thing about America is that our States actually have some autonomy and people have fifty choices of the type of culture/government that want to live in.

Nothing is free. Nothing. The only difference is how you pay for it.

They don't pay a cent for one of the best health care systems in the world.

Ask the millions of people who died in the USSR from forced starvation by
Lenin and Stalin if there's any harm in it. Oh, yeah. You can't ask
them... THEY ARE DEAD.

It's not at all relevant to Cuba. How many have died from poverty and social
problems in the US?

This is left-wing-speak for "Don't shine a light on our problems". The
truth is that American's are typically quite happy with our lifestyle,
economic models and government processes.

A very sad state of affairs that is too.

The great thing about America is that our States actually have some
autonomy and people have fifty choices of the type of culture/government
that want to live in.

You obviously haven't travelled much.

Ah well, ignorance is bliss I guess.

That's because you don't understand liberty. We have the choice to live our lives as we wish. Want to be a bum? Go for it! Want to make something of yourself? Go for it! Our government lets us be who we are as individuals.

People who covet what other people achieve are weak. People who figure out how they too can achieve what they want are strong. The question you must ask yourself is whether you wish to be weak or whether you wish to be strong?

money = strength

who/what is the source of all achievement and strength?

money = god?

are we getting somewhere?

covet = disgust at waste

you read it how you want.

Lets assume that point for the sake of argument. Even then: why don't
they have the right to "suck" and "hoard" (not sure what "hord" means)
if that's what they want to do?

Say I earn a million dollars after putting blood and sweat into a
company for a few years, and I want to spend some of my hard earned
money by purchasing old computer hardware that I coveted as a
teenager. So I go on a Commodore buying spree on eBay for a week and
pick up a bunch of stuff. I spend some time with it and make a nice
area for it in my home, where I can go and appreciate this obsolete
hardware (and a book or two) whenever I please.

So f'in' what? What's it to you that I spend my income that way? Who
are you to tell me I have no right to do that?

Are you one of those people who will never amount to anything because
you don't believe wealth is earned? It must comfort you to know that
anyone with more than you have didn't work any harder or smarter than
you; that their wealth was "distributed" to them and not earned; that
it was just your "luck" that landed you in a seemingly perpetual cycle
of just getting buy.

The people who take advantage of their opportunities in life will
always pass you buy. If you think Cuba has such a superior economy,
emigrate to there. You will not be missed.

On the other hand, if you want to make something of your existence,
come to the realization that your wealth is your responsibility. If
you want it, you gotta earn it. Don't begrudge someone else their
pleasure in collecting something. Get on with minding your own life
and make something of it.

No, winning the lottery is not an achievement, it's luck.

No, you can spend all your money and then what do you have?

For some people, yes. But these people are rarely successful. They usually either burn out and die after a miserable life or they go broke trying to buy their happiness.

Sorry, but you're being delusional. I'm beginning to think you are as mentally unstable as Mr. Panks.

From: <http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=covet>
# S: (v) covet (wish, long, or crave for (something, especially the property of another person)) "She covets her sister's house"

From: <http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=delusion>
S: (n) delusion, psychotic belief ((psychology) an erroneous belief that is held in the face of evidence to the contrary)

Based on the University of Princeton, you appear to fit the definition of delusion with your insistence that covet means other's are wasteful by not giving you what you want.

>
> you read it how you want.
>

And I think this is your own admission of your mental health issues.

The US government doesn't actively deny food to entire regions of people
because they disagree with a political movement.

So why do so many die from poverty and social problems in the US? Are those
people all just lazy in your opinion?
I would suggest that they grow up and live in an environment that does not
promote a betterment of their situation.

And do I have to mention the lack of response to Katrina since we are on the
topic of denial?

That's because you don't understand liberty. We have the choice to live our

So do we. Does your liberty allow you to walk your street at night without
fear?
Is that true of the majority of the population in the US?

I understand that plenty don't get a choice, worse their limited choices are

Your experience forms the basis of your understanding, and your

IOW, like I said, ignorance is bliss.

I prefer to look at the bigger picture before criticising other ways of

I've never heard of people dieing of poverty in the USA since the Great Depression. Our indigent get free health care (free to them). No hospital is legally allowed to turn away a medical emergency.

>

Yes, let's talk about that. Let's talk about the leftist Governor who couldn't be bothered to stay awake through the first night of the crisis. Let's talk about the leftist Mayor who denied the entry of the National Guard into the city. Let's talk about the criminal gangs who chose to exploit the situation and shoot at first responders trying to perform rescues.

Actually yes, it is true of the majority of the population of America. Perhaps the media in your neck of the woods has spent so much time telling you how evil America is that you have no clue how the majority of people live.

>

Cuba has a non-democratic authoritarian dictatorship. How are they being allowed to choose how they live now? How open and democratic is it when the reigning dictator gets sick so his brother is given the job of dictator because he runs the special police?

Actually, there are very few hard-working poor in the US. There's a whole lot of people who've fallen into the trap of "entitlement" who do just-enough to get by throughout their life and then wonder why they never made anything of themselves. Entitlement is the most wrong-headed belief that any person can have. Entitlement leads to pitch-fork and torch mobs that prop up charismatics like Lenin and Castro who then turn around and ruin the economy and ensure everyone suffers evenly.

Close enough. I lived in southern Florida for several years where I worked hand-in-hand with Cuban and Haitian immigrants where I learned the true story of people fleeing political persecution. If you "visit" Cuba today you do so as a guest of the dictatorship, and so you're experience is going to be filtered through their propaganda.

As do I. Obviously we have very different life experiences.

I'm going to agree with Payton about Katrina but agree with Clock that
there are many who work hard their entire lives and always have
trouble making ends meet because of slave driving bosses who take
advantage of people who didn't have a chance to get a good education.
There is also this bitch called Luck.

As for this statement:

> covet = disgust at waste

I was pointing out my reason for calling attention to worldlam was
because I consider his hoarding of goods wasteful. You accuse me of
coveting. Therefore I ask you - do YOU consider my disgust at waste
equivalent to covetousness?

You are obviously the delusional one.

Anyway, your little tirade about my mental health was nothing short of
insulting so I love you.

And Mr. Schultz -

> On the other hand, if you want to make something of your existence,
> come to the realization that your wealth is your responsibility.

You have blind faith in the US government obviously. I don't. I make
the assumption you are only speaking of monetary wealth.

> If you want it, you gotta earn it. Don't begrudge someone else their
> pleasure in collecting something. Get on with minding your own life
> and make something of it.

My life is already as wonderful as it is. Always was and always will
be. You and Payton seem like godless soulless money worshiping
zombies. You assume I can't be happy with MYSELF and disgusted by the
actions of others at the same time. My life is already made. You
believe people with more money than you ARE 'better' than you? I find
that hard to believe. I know you don't - so don't expect me to.

I can begrudge all I want and I can mind whatever I please.
