Well, I don't know. Who's going to be the multiplicative
identity element for your group?

Either it's a math joke, or a subtle reference to the many Tom Servos
found on the Satellite of Love. It's a wonder he wasn't always
tripping on himself! ;-)

Your right, but I'll go with the many tom servos reference.

Ah, the multiplicative identity element is the unique element
in a group which, when left-multiplied or right-multiplied by any
other element results in that other element. It's essential to any
proper group structure. Note that it's not required that all elements
have a multiplicative inverse, although if you have both a multiplicative
and an additive identity you may have a good ring, or even a field.
If you get really wild you might set up your own algebra or even --
dare we dream? -- a Banach space.

after all.

Well first, i find it kind of confusing to have a page calll
rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc. Whats the point of that. Some people
( possibly mst3k3 fans) wouldn't really notice what we talk about. I
think that if we had a group with a simple name, and stay on that
topic, that we would have a darn nice group. Thats how I feel.

It's a hierarchical sort of organization. Rec.Arts.TV.MST3K.Misc (or
RATMM to the cognoscenti) is a newsgroup for "miscellaneous" MST3K
discussion (more official announcements go into
rec.arts.tv.mst3k.announce). And MST3K is naturally short for MYSTERY
SCIENCE THEATER 3000. Which is a TV show. Which belongs with "Arts",
and is a subset of "Recreation". The advantage of such a structured
system is that groups have a logical place in the overall "tree", and
you can find similar groups (say, other TV shows), just by looking for
newsgroup names starting with the right prefix.

On the other hand, it's easy to find the group by searching for
"MST3K" (or "Mystery Science Theater 3000", for that matter).

And it's not such a bad place, is it? Often newcomers are greeted
with "Welcomes".....

(P.S. Welcome, Michael! So, that MST3K is a pretty great show, isn't
it? ;-))

that, anyway? ;-)

Well this was a very odd long conversation just to basically welcome
me to the group, so let me start over.

Hello. I'm Michael. And I'm a mst3k fan. I recently got into mst3k by
watching Tormented and Industrucable Man. Now, I plan to learn more
about it from this nice little group you have.
(Thanks for the welcome, Judith.)

Well, that was a very long and awkward conversation just to basically
welcome me into the group. Lets start over.

Oh, thank you. I hope it wouldn't impair anyone's view of me
to know that I wrote, apparently, at best the fifth-funniest essay that
Bob Newhart read for the Robert Benchley Society contest this year.

Thank you again. I didn't mean to break off the quote of the
day thing exactly, but I was pretty much away from the Internet for
most of a week and then when I got back I was pulled into the problem
of a little MiSTing-related project which, with luck, I'll be able to
unleash on the world sometime soon. This doesn't involve actually
writing a fresh MiSTing, but I'm working on that too.

Oh, that's a good idea. I could come in again too. I think
I started when I noticed someone in a class I was about to teaching
assist really slamming a Thunderdome for reasons best known to her.

Oh, yes, it's a lovely group, isn't it? Would be a shame if
something were to happen to it. But glad to have you around and

Thank you. Actually, I've missed the big time by that much,
where I don't know how much that much is supposed to be, although I'm
assured by my friends that I did much better than the top winners.

I hope you'll get to see it soon. I may be redoing parts of it
to include Ajax, which is this web development tool thing that lets you
do this thing with the thing that ... ah ... well, I didn't really need
Ajax to do anything, so that's not going to delay most stuff.

It probably is, although actually right now I forget which thing
it is I was holding for you to reveal only at a later date. For the big
essay, though, that's here:

http://www.robertbenchley.org/competition/index.htm

and I see they've finally posted the winners, too.

Oh, no, I had missed it. I haven't been reading the RiffTrax
blogs (or, for completeness, the Cinematic Titanic blogs). It's hard
enough keeping up with the blogs my friends write and meaning to reply
to them appropriately.

But I'm not at all surprised Michael Nelson would be a Benchley
fan. It's hard to find people who write a lot of comic essays who
aren't, really.
