I've currently upgraded a 1200XL to 256K using the article from the
september issue of Byte. Their upgrade covered the 800XL. Now, here's
the problem. When we run Ramsgl or Ramdbl and format a drive, the
screen turns to blue and white horizontal stripes from top to bottom.
The rest of the computer works fine, it's just when we try to access
the extra ram for ramdisk that it seems to fail and lock-up. We're
using the source code mentioned in the Byte article, and I feel that
may be the problem. Has anyone else made this upgrade to the 1200XL?
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Once we get a working
machine, I'll summarize and post. Thanks again.

Steve,
That 256K RAM upgrade in BYTE was a real dog. We have got a 256K upgrade
(256KXL) that will make your 1200 130 compatible. You can buy it without
RAM for $50 or with for $100. The reason that the BYTE upgrade is such a
dog is that it ends up including the stack in the bank switch area.
Worthless!

I am also interested in how readily converted the 1200XL is. My understanding
from some of the previous posting is that the group in southern California is
converting 800XL's commercially and that they are compatible with the 130XE.
This is what I really want -- 256K 1200XL and 800XL that are totally compatible
with the 130XE. I do not think that the source code mentioned in the Byte
article does this -- am I correct in my thinking or am I wrong? Also, does not
the 1200XL use a somewhat unique OS? I never saw any differences in what
programs that I ran, the 800XL and the 1200XL seemed to run the same programs
equally well, but the AMODEM4.2 program that would run on both the 1200XL and
the 800XL will not run on my new 130XE so there is something different about
the XE's. (Probably having to do with their use of joystick port B (the
non-existant joystick ports 3 and 4 are used somehow for the access to the
additional RAM locations.)

Is there anyone doing the 256K modifications in the Portland (OR) area? If so,
publicize how to get ahold of you. Thanks in advance!

Bill,
As I stated in a previous message, we do sell a 256K upgrade for the 800XL
and 1200XL that does make them look like a 130XE for $99.95 ($49.95 w/o
RAM). Send me your address and I will send you some lit.

David:

I tried to send you mail, but it didn't work. I have some
questions that I can't find the answers to.

First, I have both OMNIMON and OMNIVIEW.

Second, Could you send the lit on the 800XL upgrade? Send
it to : C. E. Malloy, III
		AT&T Bell Labs
		Warrenvill & Naperville Rds.
		Room: 3D-208
		Naperville, Ill

Third, I use the Chameleon program from APX to logon to Unix from
home. How do you get the program to work in 80col mode with OMNIVIEW? I
have tried every thing that I can think of and nothing is working. Please
help.
