Hi! Does anyone out there know whether "Mac" as a prefix (e.g. in MacPaint)
is trademarked by apple? If I wanted to sell a program written for the Mac,
could I call it MacFoo?
Perhaps someone from Apple could enlighten me, as I would prefer not
to get jumped on by lawyers. Please mail me, or post it to this to
net.micro.mac if you feel it is of general interest...

Thanks in advance,

Tim Bissell

There isn't any way Apple (or anyone else) can trademark a prefix or
suffix: they have to trademark a specific word or mark or string or
something. There's an old (apocryphal, perhaps) story that IBM trademarked
the names PL/2 through PL/99 when they came up with PL/1 or PL/I.
After all, aren't there already some non Apple applications for the
Mac called MacSomething or other?

Rick.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the name MacIntosh is owned
by McIntosh Laboratories (the company that makes audio equipment) and
licensed to Apple. Check the front of one our your Mac manuals.

Speaking of trademarks, I have noticed in ads for the Macintosh and
Macintosh products, the acknowledgement "Macintosh is a registered
trademark LICENSED to Apple, Inc." Who owns the trademark "Macintosh"
and licenses it to Apple? Some organization of apple growers?

Any Japanese Macintosh manual say "Macintosh(TM) licecsed to Apple, Inc from
McIntosh ("McIntosh" Not Macintosh) Laboratories.".
I don't know what's "McIntosh Laboratories."
Why don't original manual say ?
