The recent comment about mac{put,get} brought to mind a note I should
have posted *long* ago.  If you want to run mac{get,put} on an altos
box, you have to do it through port5 (I think there may be another port
that will work, too).  The bottom line is that buffers are expensive, and
having lots of them so every line can blast at 9.6kb or faster all the time
didn't seem worthwhile.  So, altos only allocates sufficient buffers on
port5 (and, like I said, maybe another).  For output there is no problem,
but for input you have to use this port, period.
