Hi all

When I import jpegs from my camera into my G4 Quicksilver (10.4.11) &
open the folder the generic jpeg icons are replaced with true previews.

When I import the same jpegs into my wife's dual G5 (also 10.4.11)
the jpeg icons stay as generic - no amount of opening/closing/
selecting etc creates a preview.

What could be missing on the G5? Any idea why the difference?

TIA Ged

"Generic" icons usually means the OS doesn't know what those files are,
hence it doesn't know what to do with them.

The OS keeps a list of "association" (don't know the right term) to link
file extensions or file types to the kind and the application it will use to
open files.
Maybe the G5's OS lost the association for the JPEG. Maybe some app mangled
that.

Anyway (if I get your problem correctly), to tell to the OS what the file
has to be associated with, in the Finder you select the file and call "Get
Info" (File menu).
On the subsequent window, in the "Open with" popup menu, you select the
default application that will open that file. This should give the file the
proper icons (and association).

If you also click the "Modify everything" (I don't know the right name, I'm
using an Italian OSX) button right underneath, that association will be
extended to all the files with the same extension (e.g. "JPG").

Oh, BTW, do those files have an extension at the end? It might be necessary
(or helpful).

Hi Ged,

I think your answer is in the Finder View menu. Choose Show View Options & check the box for Show Icon Preview.

Thanks for that - it is amazing what one doesn't SEE when looking
straight at it.
