The kernel barfed, meaning it's way down at the core of the OS. This isn't an extremely illuminating crash report, unfortunately.

If it doesn't happen again it's a chance thing.

If it starts happening more frequently, then it's time to look hard at these reports. Frequent kernel-level 'bad-access' errors can point to failing RAM or CPUs. Can't remember if the 1.8 dual is air or liquid cooled. You might want to open it up to make sure the dust bunnies, rhinocerouses and elephants are all evicted, reseat RAM, check for coolant leakage if it's liquid cooled model.

Myself, I'd probably boot in safe mode or run the cache cleanup stuff in AppleJack, just on general principle, but odds are once you rebooted the problem was fixed.

What Dan and Bruce said.

The specific "oops" happened somewhere in the video driver. That MAY be relevant especially since you were watching a video just before it, it's possible Perian or something didn't turn back out correctly.

Or, this is the equivalent of an auto wreck where the kernal panic report is saying you hit a tree but isn't telling you the cause was the driver was texting.

I am looking to buy one or two new HDs for a "newly acquired" G5 DP
2GHz machine.

Any "druthers" between Seagate and Western Digital? (Or any other
brand, for that matter.)

You might look at a used several years old velociraptor on the popular auction site. Otherwise any 7200rpm drive should do just fine for you. Personally I've had drives from every maker except Samsung fail, but it is probably only a matter of time for them too.

Noboby makes flawless drives, as all drives, but perhaps most particularly
WD's, are made to low price-points (exception: so-called "enterprise"
drives, which are built to a much higher price- and performance-point).

Samsung is now owned by Seagate.

Hitachi and Seagate are my choice in the 7200 64MB. Never had a Hitachi go yet, but I'm sure someday one will.

Seagate has, unfortunately, elected to abandon the justifiably famous
Barracuda trademark for its drives.

Originally a super-high performance SCSI drive, the internal technology
was subsequently extended to IDE and SATA drives.

The 3 TB 5,900 rpm drives in the former Barracuda family are now called
"desktop" drives.

The 2 TB 7,200 rpm and smaller capacity drives are from the same family as
the 3 TB, but with fewer platters and, obviously, higher spindle speed.

The 2 TB and smaller drives are referred to as "desktop drives, formerly
called Barracuda".

A few true Barracuda drives are still available, but these are not from
the "desktop drives, formerly called Barracuda" family.

It's only the 4TB flavor which is 5900 RPM. The 3TB and lower speeds
are, I believe, all 7200 RPM. At any rate, that's what newegg claims
in the chart they have on their product page for these drives.

I'm not sure what difference it makes whether they call them
"Barracuda" or "7200.14" or "Rosebud". It's what's inside the drive
and how well Seagate supports it that matters to me. I'm more upset
about the warranty period being reduced to two years than a name
change ... but what can one do?

newegg.com is still listing (most of) Seagate's current 3.5" drives as
"Seagate Barracuda", but perhaps that is just to help customer's used
to the Seagate's previous naming convention? A different name is only
used for the 4TB drive. It is listed as "Seagate Desktop HDD.15"
versus "Seagate Barracuda 7200.14".

FWIW, if you want to glance at their specs table for the Seage drive
below is a link to the page for
"Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"

Perhaps you might want to get this program which will stress test your
CPU's to find out if they are having a problem.
There a many choices so be sure that you get the correct one.

Greetings,

Perhaps you might want to get a CPU stress test which will show if one or
both of your CPU's are having a problem.
You can find one of the best CPU stress test programs at;
http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/
Be sure to pick the correct one for your platform.

Cheers

Also look at OWC:
http://www.macsales.com/

They have SATA and IDE/ATA drives of more modest capacities for older
machines. Their phone sales staff provide excellent service.

I think the panic was caused by the video card, not the CPU. I'd Safe Boot once to rebuild the caches, and hopefully be done?

I stand corrected, sort of.

It is indeed the 4 TB which is Desktop.

The others, at least those which are 7200 rpm (there DO exist Seagate 3 TB
drives which are NOT 7200 rpm, and those are apparently also Desktop) are
called 7200.14. Most probably from the 14th incarnation of a 7200 rpm
drive family, that which was formerly known as Barracuda.

So, at this moment, there are these drives "Desktop HDD.15" 4 TB, 5900 rpm
and " 7200.14", all others from 3 TB down, and all of those are 7200 rpm.

I get this message every time I try to use Facebook:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You
can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will
complete.

Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yw/r/eNJGemJDFDG .js:43

I'm on a PPC mac mini running 10.5.9, using TenFourFox as my browser. A
friend said something about script runtime? I ran OnyX and cleared my cache
and cookies. Didn't help.

Thanks,

I think FaceBook will not run your browser any longer, I had Camino and it would do the same thing. Safari works good.

I have gotten those from time to time on my 2011 mini with firefox. It
means just what it says. There is a script on the page that for whatever
reason will not run in your browser. It usually is because the java for
your machine is not up to date or you lack some plugin. I usually just
click to kill the script and the page may still be viewable but since I
don't facebook I can't say how that works. I think the most likely thing
is that the java installation on your ppc machine is not up to date and I
don't know that there is anything you can do to fix that. I could be
wrong though as my quad g5 is suffering from water cooler problems and
not working at the moment so I've not used TenFourFox in a while.

A someone often suggests when this comes up every few weeks, mobile sites
are another option. Point your browser to m.facebook.com and I suspect it
will work fine for you (but without all the bells and whistles).

Works fine for me on an iBook G4... Make sure you have the latest

Of course, it depends how much patience you have with your "old Mac mini",
but I think it's not that old at alll!
Cameron posted a very good link to this TenFourFox FAQ, which is really
worth quoting in here in full, and then I'll put in my two cents' worth:
----

As sites become larger and use more complex JavaScript, even with the
special acceleration in 10.4Fx, execution will be slow particularly on G3
and early G4 systems. When script runtime exceeds a certain threshold, this
error appears.

You can improve the browser's script performance in a few ways. Try some or
all:

- Remove unnecessary browser add-ons. These sometimes will interfere
with some sites.
- Use the NoScript<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript >add-on and allow JavaScript only to run on certain necessary sites.
- Disable the unresponsive script warning entirely. Instructions are on this
support ticket< http://tenfourfox.tenderapp.com/discussions/problems/174-unr esponsive-script-warning >.

----------
1. If it were my Mac mini, I would install Tiger, not Leopard. It's a bit
faster, and uses less RAM. That means you have to give up on Time Machine,
but there is CCC to make backups, and most programs that need Leopard also
need an Intel processor.
2. If you have not maxed out the RAM, that would actually be the first
thing to do.
3. Do you have the original harddisk in there? Upgrading that to a newer
one would also speed up things, and they're really not expensive anymore.
4. I don't have a Kindle, so you can hit me if I'm wrong, but I can't
understand what's the big deal with them. I would prefer an Android tablet
ten times over a Kindle Fire, unless I had loads of cash of course to buy
both. I bought a Chinese tablet-like thing for 50$ that has poor software
but works rather well as an epub reader, and it plays (some) videos as
well. No Wifi of course, and it doesn't mount on a Mac, so I have to take
out the micro SD to load stuff onto it, but still.

Hi,

Don't be too quick to jump ship ...
I haven't had a single problem with Facebook, and a browser crash
only in a blue moon.

I use Safari 4.1.3 on Tiger (10.4.11) as my main setup, (and PPC G4
867Mhz)
Firefox for video downloads,
and TenFourFox for web debugging and any other fancy tasks.

In general the Internet has not been any trouble for me, with the
rare exception of a page that requires the newest Flash Player.
But then again I don't want to encourage Flash usage anyway!

I was getting plenty of those messages as well every time I did a
Google search using Safari (5.0.6). I switched to TenFourFox and those
messages went away. Performance much improved, as well, although
videos cannot be viewed as TenFourFox does not support plug-ins.

Computer is a dual-1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 (MDD) running OS 10.5.8.

What extensions did / do you have installed in Safari?

I ran into the problem of these script warnings and their related
SPODs a few weeks ago, on google services, yahoo, etc. The culprit
turned out to be an update to ClickToPlugin 2.8.1. The author had
modified it to fix some compatibility issues with the new Safari
(coming with OS X Not Kitten), and had broken it for Leopard etc. He
pushed the fix out on 7/17 (as vers 2.8.3), and voila no more script
warnings.

Been playin around on FaceBook but have yet to see any script
warnings there, this week. This with Safari on my QuickSilver
running Leopard.

Well, it's not a G4 CPU issue, since all of the Minis were the very
last G4 systems to be produced.

IIRC, TenFourFox doesn't *officially* supports plug-ins, but you can enable
them, and - with a bit of luck - live happily ever after. ;-)
I remember I did it when on a G5 with OSX 10.4.11, and everything went fine;
most videos and Flash content were viewable.

To do it:
- Type about:config in the URL bar
- Scroll down to "tenfourfox.plugins.enabled"
- Click on the row to make the "Value" column be "true". It should be on
"false" by default

YMMV. :-)

Actually, you won't live happily for much longer. In 18, Mozilla removed
the QuickDraw code, so that's that. Whatever TenFourFox.next is, there will
be no plugins, period.

Remember, they haven't been supported since 6.0, so it's not like people
haven't been warned.

That should also mean, if I get it correctly, that one can use TFF 17,
enabling the plug-ins (if that's what he wants), and it'd work?

Of course, I get you're discouraging people from that course, but sometimes
compromises are all one gets. ;-)

The plugin will *start*. I hesitate to say *work*; I don't test the plugin
code anymore.

17 will end support with the release of 17.0.10 (17.0.8 is due out this
week).

I don't remember really, but doesn't TenFourFox support html5
videos--without extensions I mean?
Flash is on its way out, although it will take time, so things could be
getting better even, with sites gradually moving to html5? Please correct
me if I'm wrong!
And what about using Tenfourfox for *browsing* instead of for viewing
videos? ;-)
At least for YouTube, you can use MacTubes--real nice!

WebM is supported. 17 does not play WebM well on sub-G5 systems, but
22 performs rather better. Most YouTube SD WebM video seems to play
acceptably on my 1GHz iMac G4.

The QuickTime Enabler also allows selected HTML5 video, including H.264,
to be played through QuickTime. Many YouTube videos will work with this.

Finally, there are downloader add-ons that will fetch the raw .flv or
.mp4 video stream, and these can be played in QuickTime (possibly with
Perian) after they are downloaded.

> At least for YouTube, you can use MacTubes--real nice!

Yes, MacTubes is a very good choice for YouTube.

I need to upgrade a macbook pro to 10.6, but the internal dvd won't
work. My G5 has a working dvd drive, but, of course, the 10.6 drive
won't run any intel installer for me.

I am under the impression that it is possible to network the G5 and
the MBP such that they can share the G5's dvd drive, and yet load the
10.6 installer---as if the G5 was an external dvd. So, very simply,
how do I do this, step by step? I only have an ethernet cable and a
USB cable.

You need to get a firewire cable; the G5 should be capable of starting in firewire target mode, and I believe that DVD's will show up as well as the main Hard Drive.

Bruce is correct, use Firewire Target Disk Mode:

1) place the Intel Installer DVD into the G5 and Shutdown the G5.
2) restart the G5 holding the "T" key to boot into Firewire Target mode. The G5 should show a Firewire symbol on the monitor.
3) use a Firewire cable to attach the G5 to the shutdown laptop.
4) boot the laptop holding the "Option" key, and the G5 DVD should show up in the boot screen as a bootable option, which you select, boot, and install from onto the laptop HD.

The Snow Leopard installation guide indicates that one need simply to
network the machines, even wirelessly, provided the one with the optical
drive has 10.5 or later. So why wouldn't the dvd drive sharing work if they
were conected via ethernet?

Sharing the drive is not enough, you want to be able to boot the Macbook
from it.
That's why even a USB-connected DVD drive won't do the trick and why
Firewire-based target mode is such a great thing!

Michael,

I just installed TenFourFox on my 2002 Quicksilver, and I have the same
question regarding importing bookmarks, etc., from Safari. I can't seem to
get them imported. How did you do it?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

You'll want to put the DVD in the G5 and reboot holding "T" for target
disk mode. Then connect your MBP to the G5 using a firewire cable, and
boot the MBP holding the "Option" key. You'll see a menu of bootable
drives, select the DVD in the G5 and go.

In order for you to utilize a remote drive you will need to network the
computer with the required cd/ dvd-rw component. In this case via router
or switch. Do you have a 4 port router?
