I am not familiar with the 1571, but if it were a 1541, I'd take a
look at the 5V power supply.

I agree. If it works anything like a 1541. I had a couple of powersupplies
go flaky and cause that.

Thanks. I checked it out, but it only mentions mechanical problems, and
I'm sure this is logical. After consulting the "1541 chip vs symptoms"
it unforutantely seems like this particular symptom can be caused by a
range of errors and I'm guessing the 1571 is similar in that aspect.

If you have access to an EPROM programmer, try reblowing the ROM*,
that's all it was on mine and that had those symptoms -.o;

* Not a guarantee that is the problem with yours, worth a try though
-.o;

Usually the ROM chip, at least in 1541's. Not sure if it translates to
the 71 hardware, but it's probably soldered in on that board. Might be
best to chalk it up and just buy another for parts.

I can send you the latest ROM for the 1571 for $5 shipped, worth at try.

I believe most if not all 1571 ROM chips were socketed - that's what
made putting in JiffyDos so easy.

Is 1541-II ROM pin compatible with 1571 ROM ? Could I cause damage by
trying a 1541-II ROM in the 1571 just to see if it resets?

I have a coupld of 1571 chips lying around here someplace if you need
them. Once you "diagnose" the problem and know what part you need, feel
free to drop me a line and let me know and I will see what I got for
you. :):):)

I don't remember the pinouts offhand, but I would be very, very surprised
if it worked at all. I would avoid doing this.

Kinda. The 1541-II uses a 16 kB 23128, and the 1571 a 32 kB 23256, but
only pin 27 differs (A14 on the 23256, and NC or OE on the 23128).

It shouldn't cause any damage, no. I just plugged the 1541-II rom into
the 1571 in VICE, and the emulated drive works - I could load and run
programs.

What should I do with pin 27 of the 1541 ROM then? Just lift it, or
does it need to be re-routed? (Sorry haven't got the schematics)

Ground it.
