Rotten thing about the Amiga is that it uses so much custom IC's that nobody
makes anymore. So if you blow up your Agnus or CIA, then it's over. All the
other stuff (74xx logic, dram chips) can still be found quite easily, so
there's hardly any use in salvaging those.

It's a shame, but totally understandable.

Bummer. That stuff wasn't a total waste :( Some of the A500 floppy
drives can be used in 1581 drives, or even used to swap out bad drives
in a 500, 1010, etc.

The non-yellowed keyboards and cases could also probably be salvaged
and sold to people needing to repair their stuff.

Instead of throwing the stuff away, it could have been offered to
someone in the groups or even listed on eBay as a parts stash.

It's possible to remake those chips. Not as asic ofcourse but in the form of
fpga.

http://amiga.emugaming.com/prototypes/cbm-lorraine-portrait. jpg
(http://amiga.emugaming.com/prototypes/lorraine.html)

Hints 7 boards on the left. 5 boards in front. At least 3 boards to the right.
Assumingly one board in the case.
(any better picture would be very interesting!)

If the boards are approximatly 30x40 cm. And you can stuff 1 IC per 2 cm².
Seems most IC's are LS logics (except for the m68k, ram, cia etc..)
A 74LS164 contains roughly contains 36 gates. So:
(7+5+3+1)*30*40*.5*36 = 345 600 gates

A spartan-IIE "Densities from 50K to 600K system gates"
http://www.xilinx.com/products/silicon_solutions/fpgas/spart an_series/spartan2e_fpgas/overview.htm
Manages AGP 2x speeds, so it should be ok in that respect aswell.

Can be done, will take a lot of time :)

The sad thing is the guy prolly wanted cash for it and when nobody gave him
the $100 he wanted he binned it. He's an idiot. Most of those parts are
still good. I am looking for floppy drive myself.

Nothing special though. Whenever I visit our local recycling yard I see
2-3 C64 rotting next to one Amiga and half a dozend old PCs.

Three of my six C64 are from the recycling yard and so are two PCs. So I
am quite happy that people are required to bring electronic garbage to
the yard so people like me (and some romanians and russians) have
something to tinker with. In case of old C64 and Amigas the russians
don't even bitch about letting me having it.

In Sweden one isn't allowed to bring stuff from the recycling center..

Basically it is the same here (so you are NOT allowed to take
something from the rotting plants container or old batteries) but in
case of electronic components this is handled very convenient: Who comes
first is served first. And if you drop a box of beer to the yardworkers
they'll even call you upon interesting stuff.

I dunno about that, I had an immaculate A500 setup with an A590 and some
other goodies a few years ago that I simply could not sell (for $35!). In
fact, I had a hard time in the end to find someone to take it away for free.
Depending on where you live, sometimes there is no demand or interest left
in this kind of stuff.

Realistically, what do you do with stuff that nobody wants?

You send it to me! I'll take *ANYTHING* at all in working
condition if all I have to pay is the shipping charge
(plus packing fee if any)

From anywhere in the world?

Yes, from anywhere in the world.

OK, maybe not ANYTHING 8^)

The constraints are simple.

1) It must be something I don't already have.
Since I don't have much now, this is not much of a constraint.
Also, if it's in excellent condition and includes all original manuals
and disks (English preferred but can use French as well), I would
probably make an exception here.

2) It must be able to run on 120vac (without a converter)

3) It must be able to output an NTSC signal if it needs to be
connected to a TV.

4) I stated it before but this is most important:

IT MUST BE IN WORKING ORDER!

Complete systems are preferred over pieces. Example:
The Coleco ADAM console is just about worthless without
the printer.

I also search for manuals for older systems. Especially
Commodore 128D, PET, mini and mainframe systems.

Right now, I'm REALLY looking for any documentation on
the NRI 832 computer trainer or WANG 3300 minicomputer!

I get depressed when I see perfectly good equipment being thrown away
because it's not the latest and greatest or just because someone doesn't
know
where to get rid of it.

If I get duplicates, I know of schools which are desperate to have training
tools for younger students or repair classes for older students. Nothing
will be wasted. If you're still interested, email me and we'll discuss what
you have.

If you can sell your equipment, then by all means, do it! If, however,
the computer or manuals or software is just going to be junked, think of me!

Thank you for reading this long post!

Well that rules out most of Europe and Australia.

As above.

Not exactly *anything* with those constraints hence I suspect those A500's
would have met with the same fate anyway.
