Not folklore but:
I read the comp.Text.tex, There is a discussion there on the proposed UK
porn filtering [whatever]. LaTeX seems ripe for filtering, but it seems
that the filters still need a bit of work (The filters seem to ban
`breast cancer'). AFAIK, these filters are still in development
stage.

(I once sent an article, a PDF, to a certain place, and added a note.
`processed by latex', got a message back, "Is this pornography?')

Lots of fun ahead in this idiotic effort.

It doesn't seem very long ago that references to
USA academic distinctions were sometimes appearing
on the web as 'summa *** laude'.

Latex condoms are supposed to be safer than condoms made from animal
intestines or whatever they use for "natural". Offsetting that is that
somemay be allergic to latex.

But the point is that "latex" may come up in talk of sex and apparently
that may cause problems for the legitimate use of the word.

I've never heard of nannyware software that wasn't brain dead. I
suspect that the people that understand how to do it right don't want
it and that the people that want it don't have a clue as to how to do
it right and don't care about false positives.

There's a sexual fetish sub-genre oriented around latex. Mostly clothing
made of latex, but there are other "applications" as well. I'm guessing
it's this would be the use of the word "latex" which raised the "Is this
pornography?" question.

Yeah, idiots. I recently tried to purchase a new calculator as the
local store didn't have the one I wanted. I got two emails with
different delivery dates. They sent an email suggesting I check with
the package carrier and recheck the package number.

I replied I was 'shipping to store' and it was their web site that
gave me two arrival dates. They replied with one arrival date.

Next day they cancelled, said my local store couldn't deliver it, I
would have to re-order, and try getting it shipped to another of their
stores.

So I went online and found one of the competitors, had a local store
that carried it in stock and it was 4 dollars chaper. So I bought it
for the cheaper price.

After the first company returns my money, I'l lreply to the email and
suggest they get a better truck that can deliver a 5 ounce calculator.

I follow that group too, and -- those who also do will notice that
I posted this story there too. (Yeah, yeah, multiposting bad, but
given the odds that this thread will drift to topics the folks
in c.t.t. aren't interested in .... )

Probably-apocryphical but IMO entertaining anecdote I vaguely remember
from somewhere (comp.text.tex??) a while back:

LaTeX user goes to his local bookstore and places a special order
for a copy of the edition of "The LaTeX Companion" with the picture
of the St. Bernard rescue dog on the front. Book arrives. Store
employee calls customer .... :

"Your book is here."
[ uneasy tone ] "'The LaTeX Companion'?"
[ even more uneasy tone ] "With a picture of a dog on the front?"

I don't remember what the customer's response was, or whether it was
even part of the story.

:-)?

Time to move to lualatex?

I remember somebody back in the day who reported that when he requested
that his company get a subscription to Byte magazine for the corporate
library, he got back a question as to whether it had centerfolds.

That sounds familiar.

Wayne Green, who went on to start Byte, started with his amateur radio
magazine "73". And for a while in the sixties, each April he'd put out an
issue that emulated some other magazine. Not exactly, and it was still
full of constructin articles, but the layout would change to match the
other magazine. So he did QST, another ham magazine. "Mad" I think in
1967. And Playboy one year, complete with a cartoon that sort of matched
theirs. I don't think there was a centrefold, but on the other hand,
there have been times when technical or hobby magazines have had a
centrefold, in honor of Playboy.

That said, Wayne Green died on Friday, having turned 91 just a couple of
weeks ago. No explanation given, on the other hand it probably was time.
His blog had no updates from about March through to a month or so ago,
making me wonder about his health. Then the entries started again, no
dates though, with cryptic references to a health issue but nothing really
clear. And all the time he's spent on an odd diet in recent years. And
it was a decade ago that he stopped "73", the computer magazines long in
the past when he sold them to IDG in the mid eighties, and all of them now
long faded into history.

I assume it's not condoms they're thinking of but rubber fetishism and BDSM.

Oh, it goes a lot further back than that.

Back in the summer of 1994 (I just checked the vendor label on the back cover,
which is dated 07/94), I went to Tower Books in Bellevue, Washington, to
purchase a new book, _The LaTeX Companion_. It was not on the computer science
shelves (Bellevue is one suburb closer to Seattle than Redmond) where I
expected to find it.

When I asked at the information desk, the nice lady took me over to the erotica
section, and pointed it out to me. I then pointed out to her that it was
misshelved, and the store actually took corrective action. ($DEITY, that was a
long time ago!)

If someone were to search archives of comp.text.tex, they'll probably find a
post on the incident from my old Netcom account.

Ha! I responded to Maus's posting before reading the rest of the followups.
Barb M.'s post sounds like a distant memory of my actual experience :-) which

Yours is in some ways a better story, though I do find it entertaining
to speculate on what the bookstore employee was thinking in mentioning
the dog. (Sort of. Maybe it's better not to know!)

Each drive had a honking big electrolytic capacitor whose job was
to store enough charge to yank the heads off the disk in the event
of a power failure. I heard a story about a CE who replaced one
and hooked up the replacement backwards. Apparently there was a
loud hum when the drive was powered up, which turned into a squeal,
followed by a very messy explosion.

I had a copy of Linux Journal confiscated in Ireland, on its way from
the US to th UK, because it had a picture of a naked organist (from Monty
